Cutting Edge Watershed Science:
Rocky Mountain Water: the Stories of Natural, Impacted, and Managed Water in the American West

Picture
Kenneth Hurst Williams Ph.D., Geological Scientist and Program Lead, Environmental Remediation and Water Resources at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will be discussing issues that impact the future ability of watersheds in the Upper Colorado River basin — and in the Elk Mountains in particular — to provide ample water and water of high quality to a wide variety of downstream users including ranchers and local communities.  He will focus on research activities he and his research team are undertaking near the town of Crested Butte that seek to understand how mountains will retain and release water, nutrients, and metals in the face of coming climate disturbance, such as drought and forest mortality.  He will focus on three interrelated water “themes” that include natural water, impacted water, and managed water.
