Public Lands of the United States: Designations, History, and Today

Instructor: Sarah R. Johnson MAEd
ENVS 510, 2 Credits, $340
Course dates: June 9-29, 2020*
course materials available June 8-August 1, 2020
Virtual Hybrid Course
Audience: Secondary Educators, Community
Register at Western Colorado University

Expand your knowledge of public lands in America. Through interactive discussion based hybrid online learning experience, participants will gain a stronger understanding of federal land designations, history of these lands, and the context in which these places were protected. Participants will get free access to a brand new public land high school curriculum. The course aims to build connections between people and America’s public lands as well as awareness that the lands and waters we love today were once and still are Indigenous lands. Through this virtual format, agency staff from the BLM, US Forest Service, National Park, and Colorado state lands will be guest speakers throughout the course. We will explore the many uses and benefits of public lands, as well as the threats they face locally and nationally. Students will also collect citizen science land cover and tree data from their homes for NASA’s GLOBE Observer program. Activities from other nationally proven curriculum will also be interwoven throughout the course.

***  This course is not exactly 'at your own pace on your own'. There will be specific assignment deadlines, synchronous online meetings/classes, and lots of asynchronous on-your-own activities/readings. We're going to wait to decide on the virtual meeting times*** to get input from registered participants so we can find a time that works best for most. We'll be starting with a virtual meeting on the first day of the course, June 9, 2020 at a specific time that has not yet been set. Thanks for your patience as we switch from two sections of this course that were going to be field-trip based courses to one hybrid virtual version in light of Covid-19. Let me know what other questions you may have.

Course Live Zoom meeting times: Monday/Wednesday 8am-10am MST, June 10-29, 2020.

Hello Katie,
Unfortunately we've cancelled the field trip part of this course now that is a virtual course. I'm expecting to send students out to the public lands near where they live as a part of the assignments for the course. Read through the details closely above. I hope you'll consider joining anyway.

Hello,
I'm considering offering an addition course for 3 days, meeting 2.5 hours each day on Zoom in early August. I'm thinking the week of August 3 from 3pm-5:30pm Monday-Wednesday for $170. Certificate of hours would be offered; no graduate credit though. Would something like that work for you? Let me know and I'll keep you posted on what I decide to do.Thank you for being in touch very soon if you are interested. Best, Sarah

I am currently very busy with my day job but still find time to give back by being a NPS VIP and being in charge of training Trail Patrol members for the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC0 and doing backcountry outreach and first response patrols on Old Rag Mountain. I am an LNT Master Educator and have taught many LNT Trainer courses for the PATC. I stopped counting but I have provided over 300 patrol days on Old Rag Mountain during which I have participated on at least 15 non-ambulatory medical/evacuations/incidents, on many being first on scene. I am PATC Trail Patrols head of new member training. In addition to doing trail patrols PATC Trail Patrol is responsible for being PATC’s main provider of education to the public. PATC, NPS SNP, NOLS host Master Educator classes in SNP. Because of my crazy busy schedule I would be interested in online asynchronous courses in LNT, public land management, amateur naturalism, wilderness incident response, SAR, alpinism, ice/rock climbing, experiential learning, adventure education.

Hi,

I was just curious if there are any scholarships available for this course? I'm currently an undergrad student studying environmental science with a goal of becoming a 4th grade science teacher. I'm also an outdoor educator. This course seems like the perfect way to supplement my learning, however, due to COVID-19, I am currently out of work and there is no way I can afford this workshop as much as I'd like to attend.

Hello Amy,
Thank you for your interest in the course. The course if being offered through Western Colorado University's Teacher Institute. I'm not sure if they have scholarship money, they might. It would be worth calling them at the Extended Studies office and asking. Also, do know that this is a graduate course and as I understand it you have to have a completed undergraduate degree to participate. Again, I recommend calling the Extended Studies office to ask them about all the details.
Best,
Sarah

Hi, I am technically an undergraduate student still, but I am close to finishing my degree. Would it still be possible for me to take this course? I am super interested! I live really close to the Smoky Mountains and I am studying Outdoor Adventure Education. Really interested in earning my graduate degree (and eventually a PhD related to Outdoor Ed) so that I can someday teach as a professor for an undergraduate program in outdoor recreation. If I am not able to take this course this summer, would it be possible for me to take this next summer???

Hello Hunter,
This course is being offered as a graduate course and so you have to have completed your undergraduate degree in order to participate.
I am considering offering a non-credit virtual version of this course this fall. And, yes I plan to offer this course again next summer hopefully in person, yet maybe virtually too; not sure which way yet. Send me a message here and I'll put you on my list of interested people.
